Development Permit vs. Building Permit
Development Permit
Ensures the proposed development aligns with zoning bylaws, land use regulations, and community planning guidelines.
Covers aspects such as building height, setbacks, lot coverage, and parking.
Required before applying for a Building Permit.
Issued by the City of Edmonton’s Planning Department.
Building Permit
Ensures the construction meets the Alberta Building Code and safety regulations.
Covers structural integrity, fire safety, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems.
Required before starting actual construction.
Issued by the City’s Safety Codes department after reviewing construction drawings.
1: Planning & Preparation

Obtain Permits:
Apply for building permits from the local municipality.
2: Site Preparation
Clear the Land:
